This commission for In These Times magazine’s investigative feature, "Sentenced as Children, Still Behind Bars," required me to approach a subject of profound and devastating societal importance. My role was to provide a visual corollary that amplified the article’s core message: the human consequence of sentencing minors to lifelong incarceration.
My involvement focused on creating an image that would serve as a powerful emotional entry point for the reader, ensuring the artwork conveyed the stark realities and moral complexities discussed in the piece. I aimed to bridge the gap between the legal text of the sentence and the enduring, personal tragedy experienced by those behind bars. The final piece is intended to underscore the ethical imperative of examining a justice system that denies the potential for growth and redemption to those who committed crimes as children.
